Before getting married in the Dominican Republic, foreigners are required to consult the offices in charge in their country in order to know the practice for wedding announcement publications.

The documents you need to get married are:

Identification Document. For foreigners, passports, translated into Spanish by an official translator.

Birth Certificate of the parties. For Dominicans, They have to legalize the acts at the Central Electoral Board of Santo Domingo. The Acts of the foreigners must be apostilled in their country of origin, translated into Spanish by an official translator.

To make sure that people are not married: Nowadays you need one of the following documents, as applicable:

Affidavit of Celibacy, made by a public notary. Must legalize the signature of the notary at the General Prosecutor Office of the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo). Foreigners can make this statement before a Dominican notary or provide proof of their country of origin, legalized by the Dominican Consular Authority accredited to the place where it was released, and translated by an official translator.

Act of Divorce (if you’ve been married before). For Dominicans, they must legalize the proceedings at the Central Electoral Board in Santo Domingo. The Acts of foreigners must be apostilled in their country of origin, translated into Spanish by an official translator.

Certificate of Death (in the case of a widow or widower). For Dominicans, they must legalize the proceedings at the Central Electoral Board in Santo Domingo. The Acts of foreigners must be apostilled in their country of origin, translated into Spanish by an official translator.

Identity cards of at least two witnesses preferably Dominicans

CAUTION: An official translator is a supreme court interpreter. All translations must be deposited at the Prosecution of the Dominican Republic.

The documents must be filed with the Office of the Civil Registry, at least two days before the wedding. The cost of the wedding celebration ranges from 5,000 pesos to 20,000 pesos for Dominicans non resident foreigners, and will vary when celebrating at the Civil Registry or in an outside location.

Once celebrated the marriage, foreigners should start another process to formalize the marriage in their country: the transcription.
