The Minister of the Public Works, Freddy Pérez, was in Las Terrenas yesterday. Arrived at the Play with a helicopter at 13h30, he was welcomed by José Alexis who took the opportunity of the way to the Town hall to visit with him the streets of the village and for taking note of the advanced works.
Then in the Ayuntamiento, recently repainted and improved with a concrete cover in the parking of the entry, the Minister received a plaque commemorating his arrival in Las Terrenas.
The following thanking-speech allowed Freddy Pérez to take stock of the state of the roads and the streets of the village, in particular the road of Sánchez, for which he confirmed his support for the repair works, because of the importance of this access road for the local development.
The Minister also confirmed that the highway Santo Domingo-Samaná would be finished for December 2007.
After a lunch in Los Parques, Freddy Pérez thanked the kind welcome of the inhabitants of the village, of the local elected representatives as well as for the presence of the European representatives.

The President announces austerity measures
Yesterday evening, President Leonel Fernández announced that the project of the National General Budget for 2007 raises to 254,698 million RD $. Then the President announced some austerity measures which include the reduction of the public civil servants salaries, among which some will undergo a reduction of 25%. The austerity measures announced by the sovereign, eights in total, will be implemented in order to produce economies for about 17,500 millions RD $, this to achieve the surplus of 3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) claimed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Fernández, who spoke to the country through a radio and television channel, explained that the total amount of the budget will be subjected to the consideration of the Congress.
209,777 millions RD $ will be produced by the tributary incomes and the others 46,238 millions RD $ by the external and internal financing concepts.
President Leonel Fernández said that the budget of 2007 will be balanced, what means that the expenses should not exceed the incomes

He indicated that the resources will be distributed in the following way: first: 65,369 millions RD $ for the payment of the national debt; secondly: 42,067 millions RD $ for the payment of the balances and the salaries; thirdly: 31,444 millions RD $ for the payment of the goods and services; fourthly: 65,188 millions RD $ for the payment of the transfers and bonus; and fifthly: 50,992 millions RD $ for the major expenses.
As for the austerity measures, Fernández explained that during 2007 they will decrease the salaries of the central government civil servants and of the decentralized and autonomous institutions, including the members of the state companies Board of directors.
The reductions will be in a proportion of 10% of the amount of the gross salary for those who have a monthly salary higher than 125,000 RD $; 5% of the amount of the gross salary for those who have a monthly salary higher than 100,000 RD $ and lower than 125,000 RD $; 3% of the amount of the gross salary of those who have a monthly salary higher than 50,900 RD $ and lower than 100,000 RD $, explained Leonel Fernández.
In order to set an example, the President of the Republic will reduce his own salary of 25% during the year 2007, as he said.
It will be forbidden to the Central Government, as well as to the decentralized institutions of the State, to acquire vehicles for their personal use.
He clarified that only the vehicles that are required for the government and the decentralized institutions needs will be exempted from.

Official and nocturnal inauguration of the cemetery wall
Equipped with its new front door put in a few hours before and its last touch of paint, the wall was blessed Saturday evening by the Minister of Las Terrenas, very moved by the consideration brought to this building and the application of the various artists to make it more attractive.
The band of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo was also present to ensure the show of their traditional dances and music and the Mayor of Las Terrenas, José Alexis, closed the evening by a speech, congratulating the painters who took part, like Yeyo Robles of the Ministry of Culture of Santo Domingo and the local painters as Savi and Charli Simon, among others.

The director of Politur makes the security measures progress
A Civil servants’ mission of the Tourist Police of Costa Rica will come this week in the country, with the aim of applying the methods of security and protection of the tourists, the same that those applied by the Dominican Republic.
The information was communicated by Colonel Pablo Lugo Adames, director of Politur, who showed his satisfaction in the fact that Costa Rica wished the same security model as the one applied by the country authorities for the foreign visitors. We consider this interest as a demonstration that in our country we make progress in the application of measures and controls against the crime, especially in the tourists’ protection
, clarified Colonel Lugo Adames.
It was said that with the direct intervention of the Tourism Secretary, Dominican Republic and Costa Rica will have common agreements and application of methods which will authorize controlling the crime with efficiency in order to calm down these actions.

Cops work for Safe Christmas
Chief of Police, Major General Bernardo Santana Paez told 5,000 of his men to work to make this a safe Christmas for the average citizen. In announcing the« Safe Christmas 2006» program, the general said that mixed units from the police and the armed forces would be patrolling the streets 24 hours a day. Their aim will be to reduce to a minimum the number of incidents involving robbery, assault, traffic accidents or« stray bullets» $var. The chief warned his men that indiscriminate firing of weapons was not going to be tolerated, since the law starts here.
The chief said that he and his men were going to do what is necessary to guarantee the peace of mind that Dominican families deserve.

New customs officers at El Catey-Samaná
The person in charge of the Public relations of the airport El Catey-Samaná confirmed today over the phone that the customs officers accused of theft have been dismissed and replaced this week. Indeed, following several complaints and after investigation, it was proved that the personnel of the customs, asking the travelers to empty their pockets and their bags at the time of controls, withdrew some money in the wallets.
