In a key day for strengthening tourism collaboration between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, Tourism Minister David Collado has led a series of meetings with more than 130 tour operators and travel agents on the Caribbean island. The visit underscores the importance of the Puerto Rican market for the DR tourism sector, which has shown remarkable growth in recent years.
According to Collado, Puerto Rico has proven to be a crucial market for Dominican tourism. In 2019, the Dominican Republic received 114,068 tourists from Puerto Rico. This number grew significantly in 2023, reaching 199,625 visitors, representing a 75% increase compared to the previous year.
As of July of this year, the number of tourists from Puerto Rico already stood at 163,110, with an optimistic projection of exceeding 220,000 visitors by the end of 2024. The remarkable growth not only highlights the growing demand, but also the success of the promotional strategies and the consolidation of the Dominican tourism offer in the region.
He stressed that the objective of these meetings is to strengthen the relationship between the two countries, explore new opportunities for collaboration and enhance the tourism offer, ensuring that the Dominican Republic continues to be a preferred destination for Puerto Ricans. The minister’s visit to San Juan also emphasizes the importance of maintaining and expanding these connections to continue driving growth in the tourism sector.
Collado, took advantage of and remarked on the increased air supply between PR and the DR with the new SkyHigh routes, starting in October. “More connections to continue growing together!”.
Such initiative is part of an ongoing effort to promote tourism in the region, highlighting the Dominican Republic as an attractive and constantly evolving destination, according to RCN.
