Tourism to inaugurate the Via Sacra in Higüey

The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, visited the municipality of Higüey to verify the renovation works of the Via Sacra before its inauguration, scheduled for September 13.

According to Collado, this boulevard will boost religious tourism and the progress of the province of La Altagracia.

He assured that everything is almost ready and expressed his satisfaction for the early official delivery of this work of religious importance.

Collado explained that this initiative seeks to encourage religious tourism, inviting tourists to visit Higüey and not to stay only in Bávaro or Punta Cana. “We want visitors to know the architectural jewel that is the Basilica, as well as the Via Sacra, which has a unique religious history that few countries have,” he said.

He commented that they are in the final phase of the project and that on September 13 they will carry out the official inauguration, adjusting the last details and showing the transformation that this road has had.

Regarding complaints from the population that the Via Sacra should be one-way, Collado affirmed that this is a matter for the Mayor’s Office and the Chapter House. “We, from the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), only carry out the intervention. Mayor Karina Aristy and the aldermen are the ones who should address this matter. We can make recommendations, but it is a completely municipal issue, and the local government must make the pertinent decisions,” he explained.

He added that “our objective is to encourage tourism, not only in Verón and Punta Cana; Higüey is a beautiful city. We want to promote religious and gastronomic tourism”.

Collado revealed that they are also going to intervene the 15 de Agosto park, which is the central park and that, in the second stage, they will remodel it completely, improving the lighting and landscaping to put it in conditions similar to those of the Via Sacra.

He assured that they will immediately start the bidding process for this work. “Higüey deserves more. Every visit of tourists to Bávaro and Punta Cana should include a visit to Higüey to invigorate the economy of the province, which receives the most tourists in the entire Dominican Republic,” he added.

He also stressed that they will strongly promote the religious and cultural expression of the Via Sacra.
