Government reaffirms its support for the U-17 Women’s World Cup in Santiago

The vice president also met with Cibao sports leaders and supervised the facilities for the international event.

Vice President of the Republic Raquel Peña reiterated the government’s support for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup during her visit to the facilities of the Cibao Fútbol Club in Santiago on Saturday.

This stadium will be one of the main venues for the tournament, which will kick off on 16 October.

During the tour, Peña reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the development of high quality sports infrastructure, stressing that this international event will put the Dominican Republic on the world sports map.

The Cup, which will feature teams from 16 countries including the Dominican Republic, will be the first tournament of its kind held in the country and the second in the Caribbean.

In addition to Santiago, the Felix Sanchez Stadium in Santo Domingo will also be one of the main venues, while courts in La Vega, Moca, San Cristobal and other locations will serve as training centers.

“The remodeling of this stadium is a sign of the government’s commitment to sports, and an opportunity to inspire our young athletes to achieve their goals,” Peña said, adding that the Cup will not only boost women’s sports, but will also benefit local communities.

During the oversight, Elizabeth Mena, local CEO of the U-17 Women’s World Cup, thanked the government for its support and highlighted Santiago’s enthusiasm for hosting this event of global magnitude.

The renovations at the Cibao FC stadium include the expansion of the playing field, improvements to the lighting with LED technology, and upgrades to the irrigation system and turf.

These improvements will ensure that the facility will be up to FIFA’s international standards.

Commitment to sports in Santiago

At the end of the supervision, Raquel Peña held a meeting with representatives of the sports associations of Santiago, accompanied by the Minister of Sports Kelvin Cruz.

At this meeting, they discussed the needs and expectations of the sports sector in the region.

“Education and sports are the perfect formula for the integral development of our young people,” stated Peña, stressing that the government will continue to support all sports disciplines.

Minister Cruz pointed out that this visit is part of a national program of meetings that seeks to make an x-ray of Dominican sport.

“Today we began this diagnosis in Santiago, but it will continue throughout the country to strengthen the future of sport,” Cruz said.
