The arrival of Brazilian tourists to the Dominican Republic is experiencing a remarkable growth due, among other factors, to the elimination of visa requirements, a measure that has given the DR a great competitive advantage in comparison with other tourist markets, as is the case of Cancun, which has seen a decrease in the flow of Brazilian vacationers.
In this regard, Patricia Villegas, Dominican ambassador to Brazil indicated that, “despite the fact that the Dominican Republic represents only 0.5% of Brazil’s territory, there is one industry in which it far exceeds the South American giant: tourism. This is an advantage that the Dominican ambassador wants to take advantage of to reciprocate cooperation and balance the trade balance between the two countries”.
“The Caribbean country received more than 10 million visitors in 2023, while almost six million tourists traveled to Brazil,” he added.
He explained that Brazil is one of the emitters of tourists for the Dominican Republic. Nearly 30 thousand Brazilians have visited the country so far in 2024. Arajet flies to Sao Paulo and is looking to open another flight from Santo Domingo to Brasilia or Manaus, Amazonas state.
Villegas promoted the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the exchange of best practices between the Dominican Minister of Tourism and his counterpart in Brazil. As a result, the director of the Tourism Police (Politur) in the country, Minoru Matsunaga, gave a course to the tourist police of the city of Salvador, in the state of Bahia.
It is recalled that the head of the Dominican diplomatic mission reached an agreement with Brazil to eliminate the need for visas in 2021, which has increased the number of Creoles visiting that country.
The ambassador assures that they went from around 200 in past years to eight thousand in 2023, according to Diario Libre.
