The Essential Medicines and Central Logistics Support Program (Promese/CAL) opened a People’s Pharmacy at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), La Vega Center, which will benefit some 3,400 students of the university and residents of the surrounding areas.
The project was executed in collaboration with the humanitarian organization Project HOPE and financed by The Elsa and Peter Soderberg Charitable Foundation.
The Farmacia del Pueblo, which will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., will offer medicines from the Cuadro Básico de Salud at very low prices, ensuring that essential pharmaceuticals are available to those who need them most.
Adolfo Pérez, general director of Promese/CAL, highlighted the impact of the new pharmacy and its connection with a medical office that the National Health Service (SNS) will soon leave operating on the university campus.
“The Farmacias del Pueblo are a clear example of President Luis Abinader’s commitment to the well-being of Dominicans. In addition to providing essential medicines at low prices, this pharmacy will be a vital extension of the services soon to be offered by the SNS clinic, further improving access to healthcare for all,” specified Perez.
During the inauguration ceremony, Adriana C. Wanderlinder, Program Manager of Project HOPE, said that the inaugurated pharmacy is a testament to the impact that a shared vision between institutions can have.
“I am pleased to know that the investment made, not only through the Farmacia de Pueblo, but also with the university medical dispensary, will last over time, because it will facilitate the way to the UASD La Vega campus to be able to teach pre-medicine in the near future,” said Wanderlinderder.
On his side, the director of the UASD La Vega, Cristián González, expressed some words of gratitude for the work, emphasizing that not only the university community benefits but also the residents of sectors such as Las Maras, Palmarito, Villa Lora, Don Zoilo, Jeremi and Los Pomos, who will be highly impacted by the pharmacy.
Also present at the inauguration ceremony were the deputy directors of Promese/CAL, Carlos Padilla, Andrea Difó, Luis Lizardo and Gilberto Santana; the director of Farmacia del Pueblo, Frank Herrera; Ayadelky Robles, regional director of Salud Cibao Central; the director of the First Level of Primary Health Care, Ayadelky Robles; and the director of the First Level of Primary Health Care, Ayadelky Robles, regional director of Health Cibao Central.
